Queer Norms Comix Workshop in Helsinki 3/10/15

Aika / time: lauantai 3.10.15 klo 12–15 (huom. muuttunut aika!) / Saturday 3rd October noon–3PM (changed time!)

Paikka / venue: Sarjakuvakeskus / Comics Center, Hämeentie 150, 00560 Helsinki
Hinta / cost: nolla! / Free!

Työpajalla on kaksi tavoitetta: sarjakuvien luomisen lisäksi siellä tutustutaan ja tarkastellaan kriittisesti queermaailman ja feminismin normeja. Aikaisempaa piirustuskokemusta ei tarvita. Kielet: FI / EN

HUOM: Maksimiosallistujamäärä on kymmenen henkilöä. Linkki ilmoittautumislomakkeeseen täällä.

The workshop has two main narratives: besides creating comics, it is a critical expedition and a scandalous exposure tactic to the scary world of queer (and feminist) norms. No prior drawing experience necessary! Languages: FI / EN

By definition, queer is refusing to be defined, and is against the norm, any norm. However, there seems to be a startling amount of conventions we bump into in these spaces. How are these conventions limiting and alienating us, how do we as individuals stray off, wander away or plainly refuse them? The workshop is a traveling workshop, that is planned to held in as many locations as possible to research if, and how, these norms differ according to culture and location.

The workshop is divided to three different parts: a short drawing warm-up followed by a fast-paced, collective drawing exercise. In the end we draw stories of our own. Participants can join any part of the workshop, or both of them. It’s however strongly recommended that all the participants come in the beginning to take part in the introduction round. The comics and drawings created in the workshop will be published in a zine after the event.

The workshop has been previously held in Leeds (UK), Berlin (DE) and Göttingen (DE).

ATTN: The number of participants is limited to ten people. Link to registration form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1jUJlTAwyNuyMh3R5gMyPbyxGKVxOmVBHiG7A3hM285o/viewform?usp=send_form.

PS. About the name

Feministinen sarjakuvatoiminta (Feminist comics action), or FEMSKT, goes by a few different names, also on different social media platforms. This time we adobted the name Femicomix Finland for our travel purposes. We know that all this can be a bit confusing, also as Finnish words tend to be looooong.

What do you think is the best name? Mikä on paras nimi verkostolle?

OSALLISTU JA JAA!

Avoin kaikille sarjakuvantekijöille ja lukijoille sukupuoleen ja harrastuneisuuden tasoon katsomatta.

Chicagolainen Ladydrawers-kollektiivi ja Feministinen sarjakuvatoiminta ynnä muut feministiset sarjakuvatahot toteuttavat suuren kansainvälisen sarjakuvatutkimuksen sukupuolen ja etnisyyden vaikutuksesta eri maiden sarjakuvamarkkinoilla.

KYSELYYN TÄSTÄ

***

”The Ladydrawers of Chicago and FEMSKT collective in Finland, as well as a handful of independent media and comics creators and activists from several pockets around the globe, are proud to present the first-ever global survey on money, race, gender, and economics in comics.

Whoever you are, wherever you are, and whatever your involvement in comics, we would most sincerely appreciate your input on this intensive process. We’ve aimed to make the survey as painless as possible, although we must acknowledge that gaining a thorough perspective on this unregulated, unmonitored, and largely unstudied industry cannot be done haphazardly. We hope this survey will take most folks no more than 15 minutes of their time, but appreciate your thorough and complete efforts to describe your experiences.

We’ve so far translated the survey into FinnishLatvianSpanish, and English. We currently plan to allow the survey to stay live until June 1; at that point we will determine the best course of action for each translation. (We hope for a minimum of 100 respondents per language.)

We are seeking translators to complete our survey translations into French, German, Estonian, Swedish, Italian, Lithuanian, and Russian; we would be particularly happy to hear from folks that could provide Arabic, Mandarin, Indonesian, Japanese, Turkish, and Ukrainian translations as well. That said, if you see a need and can provide translations into any other languages, and are willing to help us translate responses later, please get in touch.

We couldn’t be more excited about this new project, and look forward to your insights.”

MITEN VISUALISOIDA QUEERAIKAA? / HOW TO VISUALIZE QUEER TIME?

MITEN VISUALISOIDA QUEERAIKAA?
(scroll down for English)

Mustikan työpaja Feministisessä sarjakuvaresidenssissä, Helsingissä, maanantaina 16.3.2015 kello 18.00:

Hahmotetaanko länsmaisessa kulttuurissa ihmiselämää syntymän, pariutumisen, lisääntymisen ja kuoleman käsittävänä suorana? Millä tavoin tämä aikakäsitys on kytköksissä kunniallisuuden käsitteeseen, sukupuolirooleihin, heteroseksuaalisuuden ylivaltaan ja kapitalistisiin käytäntöihin? Miten rakkaussuhteet ja perhesuhteet näyttäytyvät tämän aikakäsityksen puitteissa? Arvostetaanko kulttuurissamme kestoa intensiteetin kustannuksella, horisontaalisuutta syvyyden kustannuksella?

HOW TO VISUALIZE QUEER TIME?

Monday 16th March at 6 pm, Mustikka Collective’s workshop:

”Queer” refers to nonnormative logics and organizations of community, sexual identity, embodiment, and activity in space and time. “Queer time” is a term for those specific models of temporality that emerge within postmodernism once one leaves the temporal frames of bourgeois reproduction and family, longevity, risk/safety, and inheritance. “Queer space” refers to the place-making practices within postmodernism in which queer people engage and it also describes the new understandings of space enabled by the production of queer counterpublics.

Thus writes Jack Halberstam in his In a Queer Time and Place. Transgender Bodies, Subcultural Lives (2005). But how is queer time visualized? Mustikka Collective’s workshop offers a mini lecture about time and temporality and a possibility to visualize queer time. Welcome!

The ARX picture challenge is starting on March!

Antirasismi X is launching an anti-racist and feminist picture challenge at the Feminist Comics Residence in Helsinki on 16.3.2015. We want to challenge comics artists (and drawers in general!) to create some influential, awesome or wild pictures for us to use. You can make just one image, or a whole comics story. Choose your style, just make sure your image is channelling the ARX values that are anti-racism and feminism.

If you wish your image to be published on the ARX Facebook page, email it to us on jpg format: antirasismix@gmail.com. Also, tell us if you want your name to be published.

Of course you can also publish your picture in your blog or other platform – make sure you’re using our hashtag #arxkuvahaaste!

Feminist comics residence

Lainaus

naamatNew year, new plans! Our feminist comic residence in Villa Salin of Naisunioni is taking place in 16.-19. March 2015. We have participants from swedish Dotterbolaget and from finnish collectives Normkritisk nätverk, Utopia Helsinki, Arx antiracist network and Mustikka collective & small publishing house.
Main thing of the residence is for feminist comic artists from Sweden and Finland to meet, draw, draw, draw, discuss and write.

Planned so far:

We start mornings by scanning the daily papers with normcritical, antiracist and feminist glasses. What is written? To who? By who? Why? What is left out? Why? How does this correlate to the reality we see and live? Discussion, brainstorming, improvisation drawing together and alone.
We shall do different drawing exercises for the fun of it.

In the meetings during spring we shall choose some themes to focus. This depends on participants, what themes do we want to work with? Personally, I see it important to leave enough time for free talk and drawing, to have space to come up with something new.

Facebook event here.

If you are interested, send mail to sarjakuvafeministit@gmail.com

IMPORTANT: bring your own towels & sheets (if you plan to go to sauna /stay overnight). More info on availability of lodging via email above. Also, let us know about any allergies etc. We prepare vegan food.

ONSDAG

Johanna skriver:

Grassroots comics have been used by organisations to focus on different issues, such as racism, sexual harassment, girl child rights, school drop-outs, hiv/aids, sanitation, and right to education. The method is very simple and does not require much drawing skill. Any issue, on which one can make a story, can be expressed through grassroots comics.
Grassroots comics are made into 4-panel wallposters, a zine or a newspaper /internet comics strip for distribution in the community.
The concept was developed in cooperation with organisations in India, Tanzania, Mozambique and groups in Finland. It has been used in NGO development work and in movements and campaigns. These comics are always very powerful because they are made by local activists or the stakeholders themselves. The stories are credible and relevant to the community.”

Where do all the female comics art students end up to? Why are all gatekeepers men? Who gets the most pie?
Participants of a workshop at Villa Salin residence present the results of their research.

In January 2014 we started a research on Finnish comics field, focusing on libraries, grants, publishers, comics students and their career after school, press visibility & writers etc. Our project is based on Anne Elizabeth Moore’s and Ladydrawers’ similar research on North American comics field.
